PULSE/Velocity for Commonwealth Games

 

PULSE

 

An award winning Legacy 2014 project and was directly commissioned as a cultural response to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

 
 

Over a period of two years, we worked with artists, curators and the local community to enhance the visual and pedestrian experience between Glasgow City Centre and the immediate East End of Glasgow through PULSE; a series of temporary and permanent artworks situated along London Road connecting Glasgow Green, and the Barras Calton to the East End.

 

An essential element of Pulse was a commitment to working closely with community representatives and groups to support proposals that responded to the local context, opportunities and challenges.

This work took the form of a programme of design and cultural activity used to bring people and place together whilst simultaneously building a brief for the delivery of significant public realm artworks.

 

In advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, two new permanent artworks by Glasgow based international artists, Jacqueline Donachie (Freelands Award 2016) and Iain Kettles were commissioned to create new focal points that referenced the rich industrial legacy of the area whilst celebrating the legacy of the games. Our role included working in collaboration with the artists to technically detail and make their sculptural outcomes ready for fabrication and leading on the installation of these two large public realm artworks.

During the games, Picture Window produced a programme of temporary film projections by local and internationally renowned artists, including Shaun Gladwell, which lined the windows of vacant shop units. Inflatable sculptures by Iain Kettles created an imaginative and vibrant journey through to the East End, creating an attractive destination both day and night for visitors and locals to enjoy.
