Expansion of an existing local gallery and cafe space within the immediate East End of Glasgow’s city centre, drawing people from across the city for a day-night offer centred around a beautifully curated menu with considered alcoholic beverage pairings.

Outlier is a unique offer in the immediate East End of Glasgow’ city centre; a rustic, bustling space with a communal feel centred around excellent baked goods, a menu of locally sourced breakfast and lunch dishes and coffee supplied by Good Coffee Cartel. Outlier has quickly found a home in the hearts of those who live and work in the city centre. 

The team behind Outlier have a clear aesthetic ethos, having led the design, delivery and construction of the first phase of this project starting during the lockdowns of 2020 to its launch in 2022. Featuring warm mustard tiling, reminiscent of the subway, with the original sandstone walls revealed and celebrated, the comforting space is finished with festoon lights, polished concrete and beautifully detailed oak fittings and furniture.

New Practice have been working with the Outlier team since early 2023 to put forward proposals to statutory permissions for an increase in the number of covers, addition of a new wine bar and reorganisation of the gallery space to open up more of the available floorspace for regular use. 

With an understanding of the DIY nature of the Outlier team, we have been working closely together to design as it will be built, in conversation and with a view to building skills and creative capacity within this small local business. Our spatial designs work within the design aesthetic of the client, maximising the space through clever and consistent use of materials and making the most of what already exists.

Some key elements will be delivered by project partners - including a new staircase connecting the expanded bakery/kitchen and sanitary and storage provision in the basement to the Wine Bar and Cafe on the ground floor - however the majority of the reorganisation, new fittings, furniture and interior finishes will be undertaken by the Outlier team themselves.
